CrossFit is core fitness programming using functional movements executed at a high intensity level in order to improve performance and capability in each of the ten recognized fitness domains: cardiovascular and respiratory endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, agility, balance and accuracy.
Functional movements are movements found in the actions of everyday life. Whether sitting down, running a 5k, lifting groceries out of your car, everyday police work, or pitching a baseball game, these functional moves are integral to everyday living; they make up the contingencies of life. At the Globo-gym you rarely, if ever, see functional movements done. In fact, when you ask a trainer at a Globo-gym what functional training is, they’ll likely have you doing something like balancing on a Swiss ball while doing arm curls. Where in life do you encounter this activity (nowhere)? What kind of neuroendocrine response does this activity elicit (minimal)? These simple tests expose the uselessness of such exercises. Functional movements are whole body movements that the human body is designed to perform everyday and create a significant neuroendocrine response when performed at high intensity. Functional movements are not the Swiss ball or isolated machine movements you’ll find at the Globo-gym.
CrossFit workouts use the coupling of weightlifting, gymnastics, and monostructural exercises (running, biking, swimming, etc.) performed at a relatively high intensity to increase your ability to execute functional movements and improve your fitness. The chief way this is accomplished is through high-intensity workouts designed to elicit the maximum increases in the ten fitness domains. Essentially, your ability and work production will improve. Regardless of age or occupation, your fitness needs are the same as an Olympic lifter or an Army Ranger. The difference is not in the skills necessary for fitness, but in intensity at which those skills are executed. Through careful programming and through coaching, CrossFit can teach anyone to improve their fitness and execute the activities of life or their sport or their job more effectively and efficiently.
